Support the Child and Develop the Student

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Families, and Students,

I am reaching out to inform you that this morning (February 12,) during a routine check of the parking lots, a hunting shotgun was found in plain sight in a car in the student parking lot at Smethport Area School District.

School administration immediately investigated and were assisted by the Smethport Borough police and McKean County district attorney’s office. We immediately looked into this concern and identified the student. The student was cooperative and confirmed there was a firearm in the vehicle. The vehicle was searched, and it was confirmed that a firearm was inside the vehicle.

Weapons of any kind are prohibited on school property by state law and board policy.

At no point were there any issues, concerns, or any indication of an immediate threat to our school campus.

The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority, and we will continue to take the appropriate measures to ensure our schools are safe. We appreciate the support of SASD staff, Smethport Borough police, and the McKean County district attorney’s office as we create and maintain the level of safety that we want for our school
